Estonian State Fleet Orders First Fully Electric Ferry
Estonian State Fleet has signed a contract with Poland’s CRIST SA to build Estonia’s first fully electric passenger ferry.
The vessel, due for delivery in 2028, will operate mainly on shore-charged green electricity using a 3 MWh battery system, Estonian State Fleet said in a statement on its website on Wednesday.
It will feature onboard generators that will provide backup power and extended range capability.
Designed by Finland-based LMG Marin, the 100 m ferry will carry up to 110 vehicles or eight freight trucks and will be built to ice class 1B standards for Baltic winter operations.
The €49.93 million project is backed by €28 million from the EU Modernisation Fund.
Today, battery systems in shipping are mainly used on short-sea routes such as ferries, tugs and harbour vessels, and a wider breakthrough for powering large ocean-going ships has yet to be achieved.
