A cargo ship has reported being fired upon in the Gulf of Aden, according to a British government agency monitoring maritime security in the Middle East.

The incident happened about 88 nautical miles south-west of Balhaf in Yemen at 4:30 AM UTC on Wednesday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency said in a social media post.

"A cargo vessel has reported being approached by one craft with six armed persons onboard," the agency said.

"There was an exchange of fire between the small craft and the cargo vessel's armed security team, resulting in the small craft turning away."

Earlier this week Yemen's Houthi movement reportedly threatened to target Israel-linked shipping in the Red Sea.

Attacks on shipping around Yemen are likely to prolong major shipping companies' decisions to avoid the area, meaning the Suez Canal cannot be used by these firms. This dynamic has delivered a substantial boost to global bunker demand in recent years because of longer voyages around Africa.
