Ninety-one companies have applied for a contract to provide bunkering services to a unit of the the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), local media reports

According to reports, the majority of the applicants for the contract with the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) consist of Nigerian vessel owners.

The NNPC said that the contract would involve transporting fuel from NNPC refineries to various ports and terminals inside and outside of the country, as well as ship-to-ship bunkering operations.

The Nigerian government announced last year that it was looking to start a state-owned bunkering business, having only legalised offshore bunkering early in 2014.

At the time, Ship & Bunker reported that the move was an attempt to cut down on theft and increase oil revenues.
