The Port of Rotterdam has joined MI - The Global Methanol Alliance (formerly known as Methanol Institute) as a member and board participant.

The Dutch port was the first in the world to facilitate barge-to-ship methanol bunkering, MI - The Global Methanol Alliance said in an announcement yesterday.

The port sold about 2,845 mt of biomethanol to ships as marine fuel in Q2, up from 996 mt recorded in the previous quarter.

“Building the methanol market takes the whole value chain, and ports are where supply, infrastructure and demand meet,” Alexander Döll, CEO of MI - The Global Methanol Alliance, said.

“Port of Rotterdam has already shown what that looks like in practice, from the world's first barge-to-ship methanol bunkering to a growing trade in methanol.”

“Methanol will play a key role in decarbonising our industrial cluster and shipping,” Matthijs van Doorn, vice president commercial at the Port of Rotterdam, said.
