Two Horizon Europe projects are joining forces to help move direct-current (DC) ship power systems towards commercial deployment.

The STEESMAT and ALL-DC-SHIPS projects are developing and testing technologies designed to improve energy efficiency and make it easier to integrate batteries and fuel cells onboard ships, the STEESMAT consortium coordinator, Maritime CleanTech, said in an emailed update today.

The projects are also looking at how DC power systems can support the integration of other low-emission energy sources.

ALL-DC-SHIPS is developing a fully integrated DC electrical architecture for testing on a 3,000 GT dredger.

STEESMAT is working on a medium-voltage DC system using solid-state transformers, a low-voltage DC grid and AI-based energy management.

The system will be tested on land before demonstration aboard a commercial vessel.

The projects will also focus on testing, validation and standards needed for wider adoption of DC systems.

They will jointly host a workshop at SMM Hamburg on September 3 to discuss the technical, regulatory and commercial steps needed to make DC ship power market-ready.
