Bio-LNG Share of Gasum Marine Fuel Sales Jumped to 12.3% in 2025
Finnish energy company Gasum has said bio-LNG accounted for 12.3% of its total marine fuel gas sales in 2025, up sharply from 0.8% a year earlier.
The increase reflected growing demand for lower-carbon marine fuel options and pointed to continued momentum in the sector’s decarbonisation efforts, it said in an emailed update on Thursday.
“This is a very positive development that clearly shows the viability of the methane pathway in decarbonizing shipping, Jacob Granqvist, VP at Gasum Maritime, said.
“We anticipate a continued growth in biomethane volumes going forward, since we see that the demand for lower-emission fuel solutions continues to strengthen.”
Bio-LNG is a cleaner alternative to conventional LNG and can be used as a drop-in fuel in dual-fuel LNG ships.
The global LNG-capable fleet is currently made up of 934 ships, with 672 more to join the fleet by 2030, according to classification society DNV data.
Gasum said one of the main drivers behind the growth was the FuelEU Maritime regulation, which came into force last year and requires vessels operating in Europe to gradually reduce fuel carbon intensity.
Gasum had pooled 642 vessels for the FuelEU Maritime 2025 reporting period.
