Baltic Shipping Company Adds Two Wind-Assisted Vessels to Fleet
Baltic Shipping Company has taken delivery of two new coasters fitted with wind-assisted propulsion and battery technology.
The Baltic Iron and Baltic Timber are both equipped with two Econowind’s VentoFoils wind propulsion system, which are expected to reduce bunker fuel consumption by up to 12%, the firm said in an emailed statement on Wednesday.
The 3,550 DWT vessels also have large battery packs, making them hybrid vessels.
Baltic Timber entered service first, followed by sister vessel Baltic Iron.
Both are now in commercial operation under the company's management.
The VentoFoils use wind to provide additional thrust, reducing the power needed from the main engine and, in turn, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The battery system works alongside the wind-assisted propulsion to improve efficiency during daily operations.
“The combination of VentoFoils and a large battery pack represents an important step towards more energy- efficient shipping,” Ronnie Hulstrøm, CEO of Baltic Shipping Company, said.
“It demonstrates what can already be achieved with technologies available today.”
The vessels will serve the European shortsea market.
