Dutch maritime battery supplier EST-Floattech has supplied its battery system for the newly built inland cruise vessel Amadeus Aurea.

The vessel, built at TeamCo Shipyard in the Netherlands, entered service last month, EST-Floattech said in its latest press release on its website.

The hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system was developed with electrical integrator Werkina Werkendam and includes a 520 kWh battery system designed to reduce generator use, fuel consumption and emissions.

According to EST-Floattech, the battery system helps the vessel operate with lower noise and exhaust emissions, particularly in ports and urban areas with stricter environmental rules.

The battery setup is part of a wider onboard energy system that also includes hybrid propulsion technology, exhaust gas treatment and heat recovery systems.

Today, battery systems in shipping are mainly used on short-sea routes such as ferries and hybrid vessels, and a wider breakthrough for powering large ocean-going ships has yet to be achieved.
