Shipbuilder Fincantieri’s subsidiary Vard has launched a commissioning service operation vessel (CSOV) featuring a battery-hybrid propulsion system.

The vessel is one of four CSOVs for offshore wind operations, Vard said in a LinkedIn post on Monday.

It is also designed to allow conversion to methanol propulsion.

Several shipowners have ordered ships that are suitable for future conversion to methanol propulsion.

However, most of those delivered vessels have yet to be retrofitted for methanol use, reflecting the industry’s cautious approach to alternative fuel adoption.

“This ship is one of four CSOv based on VARD 4 19 design - result of the work of our team of experts - that represents a flexible platform tailored for sustainable offshore wind operations, featuring battery hybrid propulsion and prepared for green methanol,” Vard said.
