EIF Commits €200 Million to Expand European Biomethane Production
The European Investment Fund (EIF), part of the EIB Group, has committed €200 million to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners' fund to scale biomethane production.
The fund will be used to develop, build and operate industrial-scale biogas plants across Europe using anaerobic digestion technology, EIF said in a press release on Thursday.
The facilities will convert manure and agricultural waste into biomethane for use in sectors including industry and maritime transport.
Biomethane can be used in dual-fuel LNG ships as a drop-in marine fuel.
The Advanced Bioenergy Fund II (ABF II) is targeting a total size of €1.5 billion and will focus mainly on greenfield projects in Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Belgium and Finland.
“This investment reflects Europe’s growing focus on renewable gases and sustainable energy infrastructure,” Merete Clausen, deputy chief executive of EIF, said.
The EIF investment is backed by the EU’s InvestEU and REPowerEU initiatives.
