Bernhard Schulte Christens First LNG-Powered LCO2 Carrier in China
Bernhard Schulte, the shipowning arm of Schulte Group, has christened its first LNG-capable CO2 carrier in China.
The vessel, Northern Purpose, was built at Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore Co and will operate under a long-term charter for carbon capture firm Northern Lights, the company said in an email statement on Wednesday.
Designed to transport captured CO2 from industrial customers in Northwest Europe to Norway for permanent offshore storage, the ship has a cargo capacity of 7,500 m3.
“The delivery of the ‘Northern Purpose’ marks an important milestone in scaling the transportation capacity needed to support Europe’s decarbonisation,” Tim Heijn, Managing Director of Northern Lights, said.
The vessel is equipped with LNG dual-fuel propulsion, a wind-assisted rotor sail and an air lubrication system aimed at lowering emissions.
