Hapag-Lloyd Q1 Bunker Consumption Dropped by 3.7% on Year
German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd’s bunker consumption fell by 3.7% to 1.2 million mt in Q1 2026 compared to the same quarter in 2025.
The company reported bunker and emissions expenses of €549.6 million in Q1 2026, down from last year’s €693 million, the firm said in a quarterly earnings report released on Wednesday.
This drop was largely due to lower bunker expenses.
The company's average bunker price in Q1 2026 was $485/mt, down from $553/mt in the same period last year.
The costs of EU emissions allowances rose to €50.8 million from €35.3 million for the same period a year earlier.
By comparison, AP Moller-Maersk bunker consumption dropped by 5.3% on the year in Q1 2026.
Hapag-Lloyd reported a loss of $256 million in Q1.
“The first quarter of 2026 was unsatisfactory for us, with weather-related supply chain disruptions and pressure on freight rates leading to significantly lower results, Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, said.
“At the same time, our Gemini network has proven its resilience even under difficult conditions, helping us maintain a reliable service offering for our customers.”
