Japanese shipping firm K Line has ordered four 1,380 vehicle-capacity LNG dual-fuel car carriers.

The shipbuilding contracts have been signed with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co, K Line said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

Upon delivery, these vessels will be operating on European short sea routes.

“The vessels are designed for the frequent transport of small lots in European short sea shipping, K Line said.

“They are also designed to comply with size restrictions, which some European ports for imported cars have.”

K Line says it would consider using biofuels and bio-LNG as fuels for these ships in addition to LNG.

Bio-LNG is a low-carbon alternative to conventional LNG and can be used as a drop-in fuel in LNG-fuelled ships.
