A tanker was attacked by a small boat carrying explosive devices off the coast of Oman on Thursday, causing a fire in its engine room, according to a British government agency monitoring maritime security in the region.

The incident occurred about 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, while the vessel was transiting outbound the Strait of Hormuz, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said in a social media update today.

UKMTO added the tanker was approached by a small boat carrying explosive devices attached to its hull above the waterline.

Subsequent blasts caused a fire in the engine room, temporarily disabling the vessel.

The fire has since been extinguished, and the tanker is continuing towards its next port of call.

All crew members are safe, with no environmental impact reported, UKMTO said in an updated incident report.
