Hanwha Ocean Gets ABS Approval for Fuel System to Switch from LNG to Ammonia
Hanwha Ocean has received approval in principle from ABS for a fuel system that allows an LNG carrier to switch from LNG to ammonia without replacing its fuel tank or fuel supply system.
The approval covers a multi-purpose fuel tank and integrated fuel gas supply system designed for an electrically propelled LNG carrier powered by a gas turbine, ABS said in an announcement last week.
The system can supply either LNG or ammonia to the gas turbine, allowing the vessel to transition between the two fuels.
ABS awarded the approval at Gastech 2026 after reviewing the design against relevant class and international requirements.
The AIP builds on previous work between ABS and Hanwha Ocean, including approval for an ammonia gas turbine propulsion system in 2023 and a gas dispersion study for a 174,000 m3 LNG carrier with an ammonia gas turbine in 2024.
