Engine manufacturer Wartsila will supply a total of 36 LNG dual-fuel engines for 12 new 18,000 TEU container vessels being built for French shipping company CMA CGM in China.

The Wartsila dual-fuel engines will enable the ships to run on LNG or conventional marine fuels, Wartsila said in an emailed update on Tuesday.

The vessels are being built by Jiangnan Shipyard and are scheduled to receive the engines from 2027.

Three Wartsila dual-fuel engines will be installed on each vessel.

CMA CGM already operates more than 160 engines of the same type across its fleet.

The company said its experience with the engine platform was a factor in its decision to use the technology for the new series of ships.

“We have had very positive experience with this engine. Its combination of high reliability and low emission levels aligns fully with our long-term ambition to reduce our environmental footprint,” Xavier Leclercq, vice-president, Newbuilding at CMA CGM, said.

The engine order for all 12 vessels was booked in the first quarter of 2026.

Wartsila will supply the equipment through its joint venture CWEC (Shanghai) Co. Ltd.

The new vessels will add to CMA CGM's growing fleet of LNG-capable container ships.

“Customers are seeking solutions that deliver high fuel efficiency and reduced emissions with alternative fuels such as LNG,” Stefan Nysjö, Vice President, Power Supply, Wartsila Marine, said.
