German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd and logistics firm Kuehne+Nagel have agreed to collaborate on lower-emission ocean freight using biofuel blends.

Kuehne+Nagel will use Hapag-Lloyd’s Ship Green biofuel shipping programme for shipments on the East Asia-North Europe trade lane between April and December 2026, Hapag-Lloyd said in a statement on its website on Monday.

Ship Green product allows customers to select a 100%, 50% or 25% CO2e emission avoidance.

The agreement covers about 3,300 TEU of cargo and is expected to reduce emissions by about 2,979 mt of CO2e on a well-to-wake basis through the use of around 1,000 mt of second-generation biofuel blends.

The companies said the agreement uses a book-and-claim mechanism, allowing verified emissions reductions to be allocated regardless of where the fuel is physically consumed within Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet.

Hapag-Lloyd targets net-zero fleet operations by 2045, while Kuehne+Nagel aims for net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050.
