MOL Ocean Bulk Signs 25-Year Deal for Tri-Fuel Capable Ore Carriers
MOL Ocean Bulk has signed a 25-year contract with Vale International to transport iron ore using two new 210,000 mt ore carriers.
The vessels will be fitted with tri-fuel engines capable of using conventional marine fuels, methanol and ethanol, with delivery scheduled for 2030, MOL said in a press release today.
MOL Ocean Bulk oversees the Capesize bulker business of MOL Group.
The project is the first to feature 210,000 mt ore carriers with a tri-fuel propulsion system, according to MOL.
The ships will mainly transport iron ore from Brazil to destinations worldwide, particularly China.
They will also have an LNG- and ammonia-ready design, allowing the vessels to potentially use the fuels in the future.
MOL said the vessels will incorporate energy-saving technologies and allow fuel selection based on availability, emissions performance and cost.
The company will also work with Vale and other partners on the ethanol and methanol supply chain, including procurement, supply and bunkering.
