A new feeder vessel design concept developed by Hong Kong-based Seaspan Corporation and German ship design firm Technolog could allow conversion from LNG propulsion to ammonia within a four-week dry-docking period.

The 3,370 TEU concept, developed with classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR), is configured for LNG operation but incorporates a defined pathway for rapid conversion to ammonia, according to a case study published by LR on Friday.

Ammonia readiness is integrated at the design stage, with tank systems, piping arrangements and the dual-fuel engine configured to support a streamlined transition.

This approach reduces the need for extensive retrofitting and allows owners to align conversion timing with fuel availability and infrastructure.

The concept reflects a pragmatic response to uncertainty around future marine fuels.

With a large share of the feeder fleet ageing and emissions requirements tightening, the ability to defer a final fuel decision while maintaining operational flexibility may prove commercially advantageous.
