Shell NA LNG LLC and Shell Western LNG B.V. (Shell) today said they have signed a long-term supply agreement with SIEM Car Carriers to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers for two new car carrying ships being used to transport Volkswagen Group vehicles from Europe to North America.

The car company's plans to use LNG bunkers were first announced in October 2016 and as previously reported, the vessels are expected to be delivered in 2019.

They will be among the first car carrying ships in the world to be powered by LNG and will be among the first LNG fuelled vessels to operate intercontinentally between Europe and the United States.

Shell says it plans to refuel the vessels in Northwest Europe and a second supply point in the United States.

"This agreement is an important development for Shell's growing LNG fuels business. We are pleased to be working with SIEM Car Carriers to provide a cleaner burning fuel and look forward to future opportunities for collaboration," said Lauran Wetemans, Shell's General Manager Downstream LNG.
