Hapag-Lloyd Completes First SIMOPS Biomethanol Bunkering in Busan
Container shipping firm Hapag-Lloyd has completed its first simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) bunkering of ISCC EU-certified biomethanol in Busan, South Korea.
The biomethanol was supplied by Goldwind to the methanol-fuelled container ship Seaspan Amazon while other vessel and port activities continued in parallel, the firm said in a LinkedIn post yesterday.
The 10,100 TEU Seaspan Amazon has been retrofitted from a conventional-fuelled engine to a dual-fuel engine capable of running on methanol in a joint program with maritime asset owner and manager Seaspan Corporation.
The fuel was produced at Goldwind’s integrated facility in Hinggan League, China, before being moved through an international supply chain to South Korea.
The operation builds on a 2024 fuel supply agreement under which Goldwind is expected to supply Hapag-Lloyd with 250,000 mt/year of methanol.
Hapag-Lloyd said the early biomethanol delivery will provide operational experience as it prepares more vessels capable of operating on methanol.
