The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has granted approval in principle (AIP) to Seatrium for its NEXTGEN Energy Hub (NGEH) concept.

The design brings together power generation, ammonia loading and bunkering, and electric vessel charging facilities within a single offshore hub, ABS said in a social media post on Thursday.

The concept is intended to support the maritime industry's energy transition as shipowners and ports prepare for the wider adoption of alternative fuels and new energy technologies.

ABS said its review was carried out under its Rules for Building and Classing Offshore Units, along with requirements covering ammonia-fuel systems, lithium-ion batteries and power services.

Ammonia is emerging as one of the leading zero-carbon fuel candidates for shipping, and several projects are underway globally to develop the bunkering infrastructure needed to support its future use.
