Shipping firm Union Maritime has taken delivery of an LNG-fuelled tanker fitted with the WindWings wind propulsion system developed by Bar Technologies.

The LR2 tanker Monza is fitted with two 37.5 m rigid wings, Bar Technologies said in an email statement on Thursday.

Built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China, the vessel is the third in the company’s newbuild series combining LNG dual-fuel propulsion with wind-assisted propulsion technology.

BAR Technologies said the delivery marks the growing commercial adoption of wind propulsion beyond pilot projects, with multiple vessels now operating or under construction using the system.

“Monza is the third vessel in a series, and that matters, John Cooper, CEO of Bar Technologies, said.

"It shows wind-assisted propulsion is no longer a concept or a one-off installation; it is being delivered consistently on commercial ships."
