Nanni and ScandiNAOS to Develop Methanol Dual-Fuel Marine Engine
French marine engine manufacturer Nanni has commissioned engineering firm ScandiNAOS AB to develop a methanol dual-fuel version of Nanni’s John Deere-based marine engines.
The project aims to support the maritime sector’s shift toward lower-emission propulsion solutions while maintaining engine performance and reliability, Nanni said in a statement on its website on Wednesday.
The dual-fuel system is designed to allow engines to operate on a blend of diesel and methanol, reducing diesel consumption and emissions. According to the companies, the engine can automatically switch back to diesel operation when methanol is unavailable.
Nanni said testing of the engine was completed successfully in late 2025 under IACS standards and in the presence of classification society RINA.
The companies added that the tests showed significant reductions in emissions while maintaining full engine power in both diesel and dual-fuel operating modes.
