Stolt Tankers Launches Methanol-Ready Tanker
Tanker firm Stolt Tankers has launched a new chemical tanker suitable for conversion to methanol propulsion.
The 38,000 DWT tanker was launched on June 2 at Nantong Xiangyu Shipyard in China, the firm said in a LinkedIn post on Friday.
The vessel is the first of the series of eight ships being built for NYK and Stolt Tankers joint venture – NYK Stolt Tankers S.A.
“It meets IMO Tier III requirements, includes shore power connectivity, and has been prepared for future methanol fuel conversion and UPS battery integration,” Stolt Tankers said.
Methanol is seen as one of the more practical alternative fuels because it can be handled using relatively familiar infrastructure compared with some other emerging marine fuels.
Several shipowners have ordered and taken delivery of methanol-ready vessels in recent years, but most are still operating on conventional fuels and have yet to be retrofitted for methanol use.
However, recently Hapag-Lloyd and Seaspan Corporation retrofitted a container ship to run on methanol.
