Canadian naval architecture firm Robert Allan has signed a contract with Hong Kong shipbuilder Cheoy Lee Shipyards to design a new series of battery-electric ship assist tugs.

The vessels are designed to operate on battery power alone during normal harbour operations and will feature up to around 7 MWh of battery capacity, Robert Allan said in a statement on its website on Friday.

Each tug will also be fitted with two generators to extend operations when needed and support delivery voyages.

Robert Allan said the design will deliver up to 70 tonnes bollard pull while helping reduce fuel consumption, maintenance needs and emissions from harbour tug operations.

Today, battery systems in shipping are mainly used on short-sea routes such as ferries, tugs and harbour vessels, and a wider breakthrough for powering large ocean-going ships has yet to be achieved.
