Marine coatings firm GIT Coatings has launched a new graphene-based propeller coating system that it says can deliver bunker savings of up to 5%.

The company unveiled the product, named XGIT-VORTEX, at Posidonia 2026 during a client type approval ceremony held with Lloyd's Register, it said in a statement on its website on Wednesday.

According to GIT Coatings, the three-layer coating system is designed to reduce fouling build-up, limit cavitation-related damage and help maintain propeller smoothness between dry dockings, supporting more consistent propeller performance over time.

The coating incorporates the firm's amphiphilic graphene nanonetwork technology.

A foul-release topcoat is intended to help keep propellers cleaner, while a reinforced mid-coat is designed to withstand cavitation stress and improve coating durability.

GIT Coatings said the system can help shipowners reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions and cut maintenance costs by improving propeller efficiency throughout the drydock cycle.
