Classification society DNV has confirmed that Carbon Ridge's onboard carbon capture system (OCCS) was able to capture up to 98% of CO2 emissions during a trial on a Scorpio Tankers vessel.

The five-month pilot took place on the 109,999 DWT tanker STI Spiga, with the system operating while the ship carried out normal commercial voyages, as per a press release issued on Wednesday.

According to DNV’s technical evaluation, more than half of the recorded results showed CO2 capture rates between 86% and 98%, with peak performance exceeding 98%.

The trial was the first maritime deployment of a centrifugal onboard carbon capture system.

DNV reviewed the data and verified the performance using its onboard carbon capture assessment guidelines.

“This evaluation under DNV’s Recommended Practice validates the capability of Carbon Ridge’s modular centrifugal OCCS technology to significantly reduce the emissions of existing and newbuild vessels,” Chase Dwyer, CEO & Founder of Carbon Ridge, said.

“For any shipowner that foresees higher prices or stricter regulations for carbon, Carbon Ridge’s OCCS is an attractive solution,” Cameron Mackey, COO of Scorpio Tankers, said.

The companies said the trial demonstrates the potential for onboard carbon capture technology to help ships reduce their emissions.
