Maritime company CSL Group has announced that the world’s first battery-hybrid powered self-unloading bulk carrier has entered service.

The vessel, MV Yampu, has started operations in Australia, the company said in a LinkedIn post on Thursday.

“Combining world-leading technology with lower-emission operations, the new ship demonstrates how practical innovation can deliver real environmental benefits while meeting the demands of commercial operations,” the company said in the post.

The company took delivery of the vessel in June to provide shipping services for construction materials firm Adbri in South Australia.

Its hybrid propulsion system is designed to reduce bunker fuel consumption by 25% and cut emissions by 40%.

CSL plans for the vessel to operate fully on electric power by 2031, which could reduce emissions by more than 90%.
