A burst pipeline at an Egyptian power plant has caused a fuel oil spill stretching a kilometre and a half down the Nile River, the Associated Press reports

The incident at the el-Hamra power plant reportedly happened last Friday.

Eleven nearby water stations were reportedly immediately shut down to prevent contamination of local tap water, according to Yasser el-Dasouqi, the governor of the city of Assiut.

Seven water stations have since reopened, reports said, with trucks carrying clean drinking water purportedly sent to serve other, affected areas.

Earlier this year, a burst on-shore pipeline in California led the state to declare a state of emergency after roughly 21,000 gallons of oil made its way into the Pacific Ocean
