Yara to Acquire Texas Ammonia Plant for $1.3 Billion
Norway’s Yara International has agreed to acquire the Gulf Coast Ammonia plant in Texas City for $1.3 billion.
The facility, currently being commissioned, has a nameplate production capacity of 1.3 million mt/year and is expected to reach stable operations by the end of 2026, Yara said in a press release last week.
Yara added that it aims to increase output beyond the plant's nameplate capacity over time.
The acquisition includes the ammonia synthesis loop, storage facilities and exclusive use of loading infrastructure, while Air Products will continue supplying industrial gases under a long-term agreement.
“By bringing this plant into the Yara portfolio, we are strengthening our operational resilience and diversifying our energy costs at a time when supply flexibility matters more than ever,” Svein Tore Holsether, CEO of Yara International, said.
Ammonia is widely seen as a promising marine fuel to help decarbonise shipping.
While commercial adoption is still in its early stages, the industry is gradually moving towards ammonia. The first oceangoing vessel capable of operating on ammonia has already entered service and marine engines capable of running on ammonia have been developed.
