Brazilian energy firm Petrobras has approved an investment of about $1.2 billion to build a biofuel plant at its Presidente Bernardes Refinery in Cubatao, Sao Paulo in Brazil.

The project will see the construction of a dedicated facility capable of producing up to 15,000 b/d of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, the firm said in an exchange filing on Friday.

Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2026, with the plant scheduled to start operations in 2030.

Petrobras said the project forms part of its 2026-2030 business plan and supports efforts to increase the supply of lower-carbon fuels in Brazil.

It is unclear whether the renewable diesel will be supplied as a marine biofuel, but Petrobras already supplies conventional marine fuels and biofuel blends to ships in Brazil.

Earlier this year, the company signed a B24 marine biofuel supply agreement with Norwegian shipping firm Odfjell.
