Core Power Targets First US Nuclear-Powered Ship Construction From 2028
UK-based maritime nuclear developer Core Power is targeting construction of its first US-flagged nuclear-powered ship from 2028, following a new cooperation agreement with the US Maritime Administration (MARAD).
The agreement is intended to work through the practical hurdles for commercial nuclear shipping, including regulation, port operations, crew training, fuel, insurance and financing, according to an emailed press release on Tuesday.
Core Power plans to build a US facility for nuclear integration and lifecycle work, while conventional shipbuilding could be carried out at commercial yards, including in allied countries.
The company said the 2028 construction target is its own ambition and is not a commitment from MARAD.
The project will depend on regulatory, commercial and industrial readiness.
“CORE POWER is targeting first construction starts from 2028,” Mikal Bøe, CEO of Core Power, said.
“Government can set the direction and coordinate; private industry must move the money and the steel.”
“We are honored to be working with MARAD on this landmark program.”
Last week, the company announced a collaboration with the Port of Corpus Christi Authority to study the Texas port's readiness for nuclear technology.
