Quebec E-Methanol Facility Could Begin Operations in 2028
Canadian renewable energy company StormFisher said its planned Verrette e-methanol facility in Quebec, Canada, could begin operations in 2028.
The facility is expected to produce more than 70,000 mt/year of ultra-low-carbon e-methanol once operational, the company said in a LinkedIn post on Thursday.
It aims to supply to sectors including shipping and aviation.
StormFisher said the project aims to support customers seeking lower-emission fuel alternatives to meet decarbonisation and compliance targets.
The Verrette facility will also have direct access to the St. Lawrence River deep-water shipping corridor, which connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, providing strategic access to marine fuel markets.
“The pathway to 2028 will be exciting but yet challenging,” the company said in a promotional video, adding that work over the coming years will focus on construction and preparing to supply its first methanol volumes to customers in North America.
E-methanol is expected to power the growing methanol-fuelled fleet. Several companies, including Maersk, operating vessels capable of running on methanol have signed offtake deals to source e-methanol to power their ships.
