Ecuador-based expedition travel firm Quasar Expeditions is partnering with engineering firm ABB to retrofit a yacht with hybrid-electric propulsion for operations in the Galapagos Islands.

The vessel, formerly known as Galu, was built by Italian shipbuilder Benetti in the 1970s, ABB said in an email statement on Tuesday.

ABB said the upgrade will include its onboard DC grid power platform, an 814-kWh battery system, permanent magnet propulsion motors and new diesel gensets.

The hybrid system will allow the yacht to operate on battery power during anchorage and short crossings, helping reduce fuel consumption, emissions and noise in the environmentally sensitive islands.

ABB said the retrofit could extend the vessel’s operational life by up to 25 years.
