Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) announced today that it has secured orders to supply main engines for four ammonia-fuelled pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) being developed by a group of seven Japanese companies.

The vessels are part of a project announced on October 27 to develop ammonia-fuelled shipping and establish a fuel supply chain in Japan's Chubu region.

The project brings together Imabari Shipbuilding, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Kyokuyo Shipyard, JERA, Shin Kurushima Dockyard, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Nihon Shipyard.

J-ENG completed its first full-scale ammonia-fuelled engine in August 2025.

The engine has been installed on an ammonia-fuelled medium gas carrier being built for NYK.

The company is also building a new factory to increase production capacity for ammonia-fuelled engines, with operations expected to begin in fiscal year 2028.
