Itochu Gets MPA Backing for Singapore Ammonia Bunkering Trials
Japan’s Itochu Corporation said its subsidiary ZETA Bunkering has received authorisation from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to carry out ammonia bunkering trials in Singapore.
The approval follows the MPA’s review of safety studies, risk assessments and business plans submitted by the company, Itochu said in a statement on its website on Wednesday.
The two-year trial authorisation became effective on May 15.
Itochu said the trials will assess operational procedures, infrastructure and technologies needed to support safe and environmentally sustainable ammonia bunkering operations.
The company plans to conduct demonstration bunkering operations in late 2027 together with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, supplying ammonia fuel to dual-fuel bulk carriers in the Port of Singapore.
The project is linked to Itochu’s wider efforts to develop ammonia-fuelled vessels and establish a global ammonia marine fuel supply chain.
A dedicated 5,000 m3 ammonia bunker vessel ordered by the company is scheduled for delivery in 2027.
