Indian Port Opens Green Methanol Bunkering Facility
India’s V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has inaugurated a 750 m3 green methanol storage and bunkering facility at its port in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
The facility is part of eight infrastructure projects worth around $78 million, inaugurated or launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an event in Chennai on October 11, the port said in a social media post yesterday.
The projects also cover container terminal development, green hydrogen infrastructure, truck parking, mechanised fertiliser handling, improved road connectivity, solar power generation and electric mobility.
SOPAN, an EPC contractor, executed the methanol bunkering project.
Ship & Bunker had reported last week that the port held a methanol bunkering training session ahead of a planned pilot project.
Green methanol is among the alternative marine fuels being explored by the shipping industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
