Australia has completed its first green ammonia bunkering operation, supplying an ammonia-powered bulk carrier at Port Hedland.

The Mineral Europa received green ammonia in a ship-to-ship operation before entering the port to load iron ore, according to a press release shared on Tuesday.

The vessel is on charter to mining firm Fortescue and will carry iron ore to customers in China.

The operation was carried out by Pilbara Ports, Fortescue and shipping group CMB.TECH, following extensive safety planning and risk assessments.

The fuel transfer was completed in two hours on Monday.

The trial builds on an ammonia transfer at the Port of Dampier in 2024 and supports plans to develop a clean fuel bunkering hub in the Pilbara region.

Ship & Bunker had previously reported that the Mineral Europa bunkered 1,000 mt of green ammonia in Zhoushan in China before it voyaged to Australia.

The vessel is the first ammonia-powered vessel in the bulker segment.

Fortescue charters nine other CMB.TECH vessels that can be converted to run on ammonia in the future.
