China has built around 8 million tonnes of oil equivalent per year of green fuel production capacity, according to data released by the National Energy Administration.

The capacity includes approximately 700,000 mt/year of green ammonia, 380,000 mt/year of green methanol, the agency said in a press briefing on Monday.

Officials said the sector remains at an early stage, with relatively small scale and higher production costs, but is expanding alongside China’s broader renewable energy push.

Separately, renewable hydrogen capacity has exceeded 1 million mt/year when combining operational and under-construction projects, with more than 250,000 mt/year already in operation - more than double the levels seen at the end of 2024.

Electrolysis remains the dominant production route, with projects increasingly moving beyond the pilot phase toward larger-scale deployment.

The ramp-up in green fuel production in the country could meet shipping demand for marine fuels such as green methanol.

During the IBIA Annual Convention 2025 in Hong Kong in November 2025, industry delegates expressed confidence that the country is set to become a primary hub for green bunker fuel production.
