The IMO will hold a technical seminar on the use of ammonia as a marine fuel at its London headquarters on Thursday, September 17, organised by its Future Fuels and Technology (FFT) Project.

The event will address developments in ammonia production for marine fuels, bunkering, onboard applications, engine technologies, spill response, safety considerations, ammonia effluent management, and ongoing initiatives related to ammonia-fuelled vessels, the organisation said.

The programme is built around three themes: ammonia production pathways, supply outlook for shipping, and infrastructure; developments in ammonia-fuelled vessels and onboard technologies; and operational, spill response, safety, and other considerations.

The seminar takes place in the margins of the Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC), which opens its 12th session today and runs to September 18, and is the body that developed the IMO's interim guidelines for the safety of ships using ammonia as fuel.

The FFT Project is a partnership between the IMO and the government of the Republic of Korea set up to support the implementation of the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy through information sharing on alternative fuels and technologies.

The project has run a series of technical seminars this year, on marine biofuels in February and methane-based fuels in May, as well as earlier events on onboard carbon capture, with recordings and slides published on its website.

Korea is also where some of the earliest commercial ammonia bunkering has taken place, and last week Amogy and Lotte Fine Chemical agreed to explore ammonia bunkering from Lotte's terminal at Ulsan for vessels fitted with Amogy's ammonia-to-power technology.

Participation is by registration, which closes tomorrow, September 15, and the seminar will also be livestreamed on the IMO's YouTube channel from 10:00 London time.
