Yinson GreenTech has signed an MoU with Langkawi Port to develop Malaysia’s first commercial, open-sea fully electric passenger ferry service.

The service will connect Kuah in Langkawi with Kuala Perlis, supported by shore-based charging infrastructure, the firm said in a press release on Thursday.

Yinson GreenTech’s marine electrification arm, marinEV, will provide the ferries, while Langkawi Port will operate the service. Tenaga Nasional Berhad will develop the charging infrastructure.

The ferries will use marinEV’s Hydroferry platform, with electric propulsion, onboard batteries and autonomous-operation technology from Zeabuz.

The project highlights where battery-electric propulsion can work well in shipping, particularly on short, fixed routes where vessels can recharge regularly.

However, current battery technology remains unsuitable for powering larger ships over long distances because of its limited energy density.
