Estonia Unveils Biomethane-Battery Powered Multipurpose State Vessel
Estonia has unveiled a new multipurpose state vessel powered primarily by biomethane and supported by battery-electric propulsion.
The 38 m Kratt was built by Estonian shipbuilder Baltic Workboats, Estonian State Fleet said in a LinkedIn post on Monday.
The Estonian State Fleet will use the vessel for buoy maintenance, fairway services, marine research, oil pollution response and search and rescue.
The vessel uses compressed biomethane as its primary fuel, with a 400 kWh battery system and four 350 kW gas generators.
It can travel up to 1,000 nautical miles at seven knots on biomethane and operate for up to two hours on battery power alone at five knots.
The batteries can provide power for up to 10 hours while at anchor.
The hull was built at Damen Shipyards GdaĆsk and completed in 2025 before being transported to Estonia for outfitting and systems integration.
The €22 million project was funded through the EU’s NextGenerationEU Recovery Fund.
