Hoegh Autoliners LNG-Fuelled Ship Connects to Shore Power in Zeebrugge
Norwegian shipping company Hoegh Autoliners has connected its vessel to shore power in Belgium’s Zeebrugge in its first such connection in Europe.
The LNG-fuelled car carrier, Hoegh Starlight, also became the company's first vessel to connect to an 11kV shore power system, the firm said in a LinkedIn post today.
Shore power allows ships to switch off their auxiliary engines while berthed and draw electricity from the local grid, cutting emissions and improving air quality around ports.
However, shore power’s credentials also depend on the availability of renewable electricity in the local grid, limiting its green impact in regions still reliant on fossil-fuel power generation.
“This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication and perseverance of our onboard team, together with the support of our vessel management team on site throughout the process,” Sebjørn Dahl, COO of Hoegh Autoliners, said.
Hoegh Starlight was delivered in December 2025 and is suitable for conversion to ammonia propulsion.
