The Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping said a ship-to-ship (STS) ammonia bunkering demonstration at the Port of Rotterdam showed ammonia can be safely bunkered within an active port environment under proper safety and regulatory frameworks.

The demonstration was conducted on April 12, 2025, as part of the EU-funded MAGPIE project involving several industry partners, it said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

The project aimed to test the operational feasibility of ammonia bunkering and identify practical safety measures for future use of the fuel in shipping.

According to the report, the trial validated the Port of Rotterdam’s ammonia safety framework as well as the International Association of Ports and Harbours’ Port Readiness Tool for alternative fuels.

Project partners said the findings, operational lessons and safety recommendations could help ports globally develop future ammonia bunkering regulations and permitting processes as the shipping industry moves towards alternative marine fuels

Ammonia is widely viewed as a potential marine fuel for shipping decarbonisation, but concerns remain over its toxicity and the safety of handling, storage and bunkering operations.

Ammonia-capable vessels are also starting to enter the global fleet. In April, two ammonia-fuelled gas carriers were unveiled in South Korea in what was described as a world first.
