State-owned energy firm QatarEnergy has confirmed that one of its vessels was the target of a recent projectile attack off the coast of Qatar.

The chartered fuel oil tanker, Aqua 1, was subject to a missile attack in Qatar’s territorial waters in the early hours of Wednesday, it said in a social media post on Wednesday night.

The confirmation follows an earlier UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) report of a tanker hit by two unknown projectiles off Qatar.

One of the projectiles caused a fire that was extinguished, while the second failed to detonate.

“None of the crew members on board were injured, and there is no impact on the environment as a result of this incident,” QatarEnergy said in the post.

The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing security concerns for shipping transiting the wider Middle East.
