Wagenborg Launches First Alternative-Fuel-Ready Vessel
Dutch shipping company Royal Wagenborg has launched its first vessel in its new EasyMax 2.0 generation, suitable for conversion to methanol, ammonia or LNG propulsion in the future.
The Abelina Wagenborg was named and launched at the Royal Niestern Sander shipyard in the Netherlands on October 8, the firm said in a press release on Thursday.
It is the seventh EasyMax vessel in Wagenborg's fleet.
The new design builds on the operational experience of earlier vessels, with a focus on cargo capacity, fuel efficiency and operational flexibility.
The Abelina Wagenborg is prepared to use alternative fuels including methanol, ammonia and LNG.
Several shipowners have ordered methanol- or alternative-fuel-ready vessels in recent years as they weigh up which alternative fuels are likely to gain wider adoption.
The approach allows owners to initially operate ships on conventional fuels while retaining the option to convert them to alternative-fuel propulsion at a later stage.
However, while a growing number of methanol-ready vessels have entered service, relatively few have subsequently been converted to methanol propulsion.
The company had ordered four new fuel-flexible main engines with engine maker Wartsila last week.
