Interschalt Maritime Systems AG (Interschalt) on Monday announced that it has signed a declaration of intent with Rickmers Shipmanagement to install efficiency monitoring software across the entire Rickmers Group fleet.

"We will be able to reduce our fuel consumption and hence emissions, which will also bolster our commitment to environmentally friendly shipping," said Georg Eljardt, Director of Maritime Technology at Rickmers Shipmanagement.

The deal will see the Rickmers Group's fleet of around 100 vessels fitted with Interschalt's Bluetracker product within the next two years.

Rickmers Shipmanagement has until now used a manual system whereas the Bluetracker technology will build on these records and capture data electronically on an ongoing basis.

According to Interschalt, Bluetracker will allow Rickmers Shipmanagement to analyse consumption and trim as well as to compare data from several vessels and routes simultaneously.

In addition, the system can be accessed on board in real time.

"With the aid of the Energy Efficiency Monitor installed on board, the crew is able to take proactive measures to help achieve the shipping company's efficiency targets," said Robert Gärtner, CEO, Interschalt.

Earlier this year real time performance monitoring was discussed in detail as part of the Fathom Spotlight series.
