Clean up operations are underway after a marine fuel spill during bunkering operations at Malta Freeport Terminals, local media reports.

The spill occurred Monday night between Terminals 1 and 2, Times of Malta quoted a Malta Freeport Terminals spokesman as saying.

The incident happened while 977 TEU capacity Feedermax vessel Leonie P was undergoing bunkering operations at the Terminal 2 South Quay.

Investigations into the cause of the spill are ongoing, but it was reported that initial indications are that the spill originated from Leonie P.

"We take every possible precaution to ensure incidents of this nature do not occur, but our personnel are trained to handle these incidents and have been doing everything possible to resolve this issue as quickly as possible," Malta's Independent quoted a spokesman for Malta Freeport Terminals as saying.

A 300-metre boom is reported to have been deployed in Birżebbuġa's Pretty Bay to protect nearby bathing areas while the spill is being tackled using oil-absorbent material and oil skimmers.
