Chart Industries Inc. [NASDAQ:GTLS] (Chart), a subsidiary of the Czech Republic's Chart Ferox, says it will supply the liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel storage and processing equipment for a barge providing power to cruise ships in Hamburg.

The LNG-Hybrid Barge will operate in Hamburg's HafenCity, powering AIDA cruise liners during their layover in port to reduce emissions.

By allowing the ships to shut off their diesel engines, the system is expected to reduce sulfur oxide (SOX) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions by 80 percent and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 30 percent.

The system uses two 40-foot LNG ISO intermodal containers, avoiding the need for a bunkering station.

Chart will provide the equipment, as well as engineering and assembly work, from its operations in Decin, Czech Republic.

Commissioning is scheduled for the second quarter of 2014, with the barge expected to start operations in the third quarter of the year.

Participants in the project have said it will make Hamburg the first port in Europe to offer shore-side power to cruise ships.
